Clover
A composite poem, an Exquisite Corpse.
Everywhere we go you tell people that it’s my birthday
Now they’re singing to me at the bar again
They’re singing out my name
And you’re grinning like a villain and giving me a wink cos you’d do anything to see me blush and nobody minds a free drink
I don’t have to be lucky anymore, I don’t have to be lucky anymore and instead of I love you I say I really like talking to you
Well I just really like talking to you
And instead of I love you, you reply that
I like walking around in the daytime with you! Well I could walk around this dirty old town all day with you
Everywhere we go you tell the waiter that you’re about to propose so if they wouldn’t mind dimming the lights while the champagne flows
And oh god here come more flowers
You know, you’re such a good actor
Now there’s strangers taking pictures cos we’re such a lovely young couple
Don’t we look good together, don’t we look right together
Everywhere we go, you take a photo just in case we get real old and we want to show the youngins how we dressed when we were bold
Crossing over Sunset with your arm l looped around my waist
I think that’s when I knew that I made it to the right time and the right place
For you, it was a little earlier
What can I say, I’m always slow
Your friend took a flash of us and said You look like somebody’s parents here, you know
All I know is all I know is all I know is
I don’t have to be lucky anymore
I don’t have to be lucky anymore
I don’t have to be lucky anymore
And instead of I love you I say that I want to only wake up next to you
Well I only really want to wake up next to you
And instead of I love you, you reply that I wanna make breakfast with you
Well I just really wanna make breakfast with you
I wanna make a movie with you, wanna read your books and dreamscapes too
Hey well listen I think one of each would be cute
Hey listen I think I want to raise little babies with you
I’m not running away, I’m not running anywhere
Now that I don’t need to
